Appreciated for its beauty and fragrance, Lauaʻe is a forest fern that was traditionally used to scent freshly-made kapa cloth, strung in pandanus leis, and used for body adornment by Kahiko hula dancers. In modern times it is used in decorative indoor foliage arrangements and in landscaping. In this woodcut print, I used the two-block reduction process of carving and printing. Handmade Japanese paper gives the original limited edition prints a natural look and feel.

Print Editions and my Take on Reproductions
Because printmakers produce an edition of original prints that are numbered, in the past, most artists who work in this medium have not offered giclees. However, with the rise of digital art I am committed to offering reproductions because I want to make a sustainable living through my art. Also, many more people can enjoy beautiful art in their homes because these reproductions are more affordable. For both of those reasons it makes me very happy to let go of this ancient tradition! I still honor the tradition by offering an image as a giclee print only after all of the original prints in that edition are sold out in my studio collection.
