Description

The dramatic Hawaiian tree fern is a common sight in the rain forests of Hawai’i. These ferns grow as large as 25 feet. The intricate fronds unfurl from stalks sheathed in furry brown “pule,” a fiber which was used traditionally in the embalming process. The fiber was harvested in the late 1800’s for commercial use as stuffing for mattresses and pillows. The unfurling fronds offer one of nature’s most beautiful and delicate sculptures.
