Amaʻu

These sturdy fronds were used by farmers as mulch for their dryland crops to pave the pathways for royalty during rituals, and as thatching for huts. Women squeezed out chunks of pulpy sap from the fern stems and added this mucilaginous glue to kapa scraps to join the edges together.
