Pulelehua with Koa
Koa is the largest tree in the Hawaii rainforest ecosystem and is usually found near `Ohi`a trees. The Pulelehua, also known as the Kamehameha butterfly, is found in deep forests inhabited by Koa. These butterflies find the sap of Koa irresistible and congregate at open wounds or areas where sap is exposed. Pulelehua lay their eggs on the leaves of the Mamake plant which is the caterpillar’s first food source.
