Nui Hewahewa na Mamane

“The Mamane is abundant” is my vision for these endangered trees that support the Palila native bird. It is estimated that 1000 Palila are left in the wild. These birds eat only the seeds and sometimes the yellow flowers of the Mamane tree. This is an amazing story of co-evolution with the Palila adapting to the highly toxic Mamane seeds. The trees have been decimated by the sheep, goats and other ungulates that have been introduced to the island. Palila can only be found in the few patches of Mamane forest that still exist.
