Iliahi (Sandalwood)

Ancient Hawaiians pounded fragrant chips from the heartwood of Iliahi into the bark of the wauke or mulberry paper plant as they beat the fibers into kapa cloth for clothing. The scent remained in their clothes for years. They frequently layered wood slivers between the folds of kapa for storage.
